AFL SC: R3 Candidates

The R3 position is heavily contested in the off-season, generally between a handful of options, but can still see enough differentiation and discussion between SC players. The ruck bench spot has been a strong source of cash generation through past seasons, including names such as Kieren Briggs and famously Braydon Preuss.
Toby Conway $180k
Entering his third season at Geelong, the former pick 24 is earning high praise within the Cats four walls. Both part-time coach, Josh Jenkins and ruck teammate, Rhys Stanley commented on Conway's growth across the pre-season, noting "(It's been good to) see him flourish into what we know he's gonna be," and "Knowing him and having worked with him closely, Conway has every tool at his disposal to become an elite ruckman of the competition," Jenkins stated. Conway had struggled with foot issues across 2023, before returning to make his debut against the Western Bulldogs in round 24. On debut, he managed six disposals and 24 hitouts against the AFL's premier ruckman, Tim English. If Conway can continue his push and gain the Cats no.1 ruck role by round one, there is no reason why anyone should pass on him.
Jordon Sweet $158k
When eagle-eyed Fantasy/SC fans heard the news that Sweet was about to be traded to Port Adelaide, the word quickly spread and brought excitement. Until shortly after Ivan Soldo was announced to be joining him, causing a ruck battle to ensue over the summer. But in recent days, Sweet has been spotted as Port Adelaide's no.1 ruck in match simulations, making coaches wonder if this is our man that will lock down R3. Sweet played in the Dogs VFL team for the whole of 2023, averaging 6.9 kicks, 6.9 handballs and 43.2 hitouts, which earned him a spot in the VFL team of the year. If he can replicate that form in the pre-season and make it into Port's round one team as a solo ruck, his ownership should be sky high.
Sam Naismith $123k
Another ruck that earned a spot on a list after a strong VFL season, is former Sydney Swan, Sam Naismith. Whilst playing in the VFL with Port Melbourne, Naismith averaged 8.5 kicks, 5.3 handballs and 37.1 hitouts, to stake his claim to return to an AFL list. That is when Richmond came calling and signed him up to vie for a ruck spot alongside Toby Nankervis and Samson Ryan, as well as the off season departure of Soldo to the Power. Naismith has unfortunately had substantial injury problems in the past at Sydney, with 13 games being the most he has played in a season (2017), with an average of 66.2 SC. If Adem Yze decides to include Naismith in his round one plans, he may be an interesting option, but his injury past is very worrying.
I thank you all again for reading and best of luck heading into the 2024 SuperCoach season.
